The Indian government will pause new proposals under the ₹10,000 crore IndiaAI Mission after April 22 due to an overwhelming response, with 190+ applications already received in phases 1 and 2. Phase 3 submissions—now extended to April 22—target large/small language models (LLMs/SLMs) trained on Indian datasets, aiming to reduce reliance on foreign AI tools

Key details:

Phase 1 (Jan 30–Feb 15): 67 proposals (22 LLMs, 45 SLMs).

Phase 2 (Feb 16–Mar 15): 120 proposals (36 LLMs, 84 SLMs).

Phase 3 deadline: Extended to April 22 for pending submissions

The pause allows evaluation of existing proposals, prioritizing ethical AI, scalability, and societal impact. The initiative aims to establish India as a global AI hub through seven pillars, including compute infrastructure and startup financing
