In a landmark move for India’s maritime ambitions, French shipping giant CMA CGM has officially registered its container vessel CMA CGM Vitoria under the Indian flag. The ceremony at Mumbai’s Nhava Sheva Free Port Terminal marks the first time a major global container carrier has flagged a ship in India, signaling confidence in the country’s regulatory reforms and maritime infrastructure.
Key Highlights
Strategic Shift: CMA CGM's move comes after a February 2025 pledge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the latter's visit to the company's Marseille headquarters. The reflagging fits into India's efforts to win global tonnage and position itself as a competitive ship-registration hub.
Operational Footprint: The 2,592-TEU CMA CGM Vitoria (delivered in 2008) will sail under the Indian flag, manned by all-Indian crews and classed by the Indian Register of Shipping. Another ship, CMA CGM Manaus, will be on its way shortly, with three more to follow in the months ahead.
GIFT City Entity: The firm set up CMA CGM Shipping Assets India IFSC Pvt Ltd in Gujarat's GIFT City to hold the vessels, and they finished the exercise in a record 11 days with clearances from India's Directorate General of Shipping.
Industry Implications: The decision questions the notion that India is a tax and regulator-plagued jurisdiction, in all likelihood going to tempt others to emulate suit. It fortifies India's stance on the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC) trade corridor.
Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and the Minister of State Shantanu Thakur graced the flagging ceremony, underlining its importance towards India's initiative to grow flagged fleet and oceanic clout.
