India's commercial vehicle sector is in the midst of a revolutionary change, adopting sustainability and cutting-edge technology to reshape the mobility of the future. Celebrating Earth Day 2025, the industry announced historic sales of electric and CNG vehicles, with 1.96 million electric vehicles sold in FY2025 alone-almost 700,000 of them electric three-wheelers, now a staple for urban goods and passenger transport. CNG commercial vehicles are also robust, underpinned by a fast-growing CNG station network expected to increase to 17,000 by 2030.
This green push is supported by strong policy backing, such as the Union Budget 2025's emphasis on clean energy vehicles and EV battery production incentives, and the enforcement of more stringent emission norms and vehicle scrappage policies. Automakers are investing in future technologies like electric and autonomous trucks, connected cars, and advanced battery technology, while also focusing on circular economy practices and carbon-neutral operations.
Challenges persist, especially in scaling up fast-charging infrastructure and battery technology, but industry confidence is high as investments and government efforts continue to drive adoption. With e-commerce, logistics, and infrastructure growth driving demand, and a strong push towards innovation and sustainability, India's commercial vehicle industry is well on its way to spearheading the shift to a greener, tech-enabled future.
