Recent advancements in coronary artery treatment are revolutionizing patient care, offering safer and more effective solutions for managing artery blockages. Senior consultant interventional cardiologist Dr. Y Vijayachandra Reddy, speaking at a medical briefing in Tirupati, highlighted the latest innovations that are transforming the field of interventional cardiology.

Dr. Reddy explained that the primary cause of artery blockage is the accumulation of LDL cholesterol, which can lead to severe heart conditions, including sudden cardiac arrest. While gradual blockages may result in angina and chronic heart disease, the sudden rupture of plaques can trigger acute heart attacks, requiring immediate intervention.

To diagnose the severity of blockages, specialists rely on coronary angiography, ECG, and echocardiography. Treatment options range from lifestyle modifications and medications for mild cases to advanced procedures such as coronary angioplasty, stenting, and bypass surgery for more severe conditions.

Recent technological advancements have significantly improved the success rates of minimally invasive procedures. Innovations such as drug-eluting stents, shockwave lithotripsy, robotic-assisted angioplasty, and ultra-low contrast techniques are making interventions safer and more precise. Additionally, cutting-edge imaging modalities like IVUS and OCT, along with support devices such as Impella pumps, are enabling doctors to treat complex blockages with greater accuracy.

Dr. Reddy described the current era as a golden age for coronary interventions, emphasizing that these advancements are reducing the need for open-heart surgery while improving patient outcomes.
