In a major step towards curbing plastic pollution, the government of Himachal Pradesh has issued a state-wide ban on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles from June 1, 2025. The move is a part of the state's overall efforts towards environmental protection and sustainable living.
Key Highlights:
- The ban is specifically on PET bottles, especially those with a capacity of up to 500 ml, which are one of the leading causes of littering and environmental degradation.
- The ban applies to all government functions, state-owned HPTDC hotels, and private hospitality facilities. These institutions are urged to use environment-friendly options like glass bottles, steel cans, or water stalls.
- Public and private transport vehicles, including taxis and HRTC buses, will have to fit waste collection bins by April 29, 2025. Failure to comply will attract penalties of up to Rs. 10,000.
- Littering biodegradable waste will incur a fine of Rs. 1,500, while more stringent fines are levied for violations of single-use plastic.
- The government has authorized officials from different departments to implement the ban and compound offences to ensure stringent compliance.
- Awareness campaigns will be initiated to inform the public about the ecological effects of plastic waste and encourage sustainable alternatives.
This move is an extension of Himachal Pradesh's heritage of eco-leadership since the state had first prohibited low-grade plastic and polythene carry bags in 2008. By making this bold move, the government hopes to become an example for other states, so that its citizens and tourists experience a cleaner and greener tomorrow.
