The Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) has given a record performance in FY 2024–25, selling its highest amount of tea in 52 years and setting India's tea industry new milestones. GTAC auctioned a record 169.13 million kilograms of tea, an increase from 166.34 million kg the previous year, with the per-kilogram price averaging ₹227.70—a hike of ₹44.50 compared to last year. The achievement resulted in the total turnover of the centre soaring to a record ₹3,851 crore.

Key Takeaways:
  • GTAC's string of record consecutive years was spearheaded by excellent demand for value-added Assam teas, where a select portfolio of Hookmool teas made an all-time high of ₹751 per kg.
  • Bought Leaf Factories (BLFs) too registered a successful year, where teas from Bejopathar priced at ₹471 per kg and Dhemaji district BLFs fetched top dollar in Assam.
  • The low cost of selling at the centre and rigid quality control made it the hub of choice auction centre for vendors, further boosting its leadership role in the domestic tea market.
GTAC's tea lounge, marketing single-origin Assam teas, registered over ₹1 crore in sales, becoming tourist and consumer magnets looking for the real Assam taste.
Assam, which produces almost 700 million kg of tea per year, remains the backbone of India's tea industry, with GTAC's record year in line with a worldwide boom for high-quality, traceable teas.
