In a historic step, the Assam government has made plans to convert Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) into one of the biggest and most advanced medical campuses in India. The Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled that the hospital will be upgraded to a capacity of 5,000 beds, becoming one of the biggest healthcare complexes in the region. This change encompasses the creation of cutting-edge treatment centers, such as a new 800-bed Mother and Child Care Hospital on the GMCH campus, which will provide advanced pediatric care.
The current infrastructure improvements also encompass the setting up of Northeast India's first onco-robotic surgery facility, which is a major step in cancer treatment capabilities. The government plans to include super-specialty services like neurology, cardiology, and kidney transplantation in the extended facility, along with newer diagnosis and treatment facilities. The project signifies Assam's dedication to delivering world-class healthcare as well as ensuring reduction in regional inequities. With speedy development and planned thinking, GMCH will be at the forefront of being a medical hub, not only in the Northeast but for all of India.
