Amaravati, the planned capital of Andhra Pradesh, is set to make history as the world’s first city powered entirely by renewable energy. With an ambitious plan to harness 2,700 megawatts of green energy, the city aims to meet all its electricity needs through sustainable sources like solar, wind, and hydropower.
The Rs 65,000-crore project, spread across 217 square kilometers, is designed to be an ultra-modern yet environmentally sustainable capital. The Andhra Pradesh Capital Region, spanning 8,352 square kilometers, will integrate cutting-edge energy infrastructure into its smart city design, setting a global benchmark for urban sustainability.
Key Highlights:
-
Amaravati will generate 2,700 megawatts of renewable energy, ensuring zero dependence on fossil fuels.
-
The city will feature rooftop solar power systems, with mandatory installations on government and commercial buildings.
-
Public transport, including the Amaravati Metro and an electric bus fleet, will run entirely on renewable energy.
-
EV charging infrastructure will be widely available for public and government use.
-
Green building standards will be enforced to optimize energy efficiency and reduce carbon footprints.
-
A district cooling system is planned for government complexes to reduce cooling demands in Andhra Pradesh’s high-temperature climate.
The foundation stone for the greenfield capital city on the banks of the Krishna River is expected to be laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi later this month. Amaravati’s development aligns with India’s broader commitment to clean energy and climate action, reinforcing the country’s leadership in the global clean energy transition.
