India's AI innovation motor is revving, with more than 86,000 AI patents filed since 2010 and up to 2025-representing over 25% of India's total tech patents. That benchmark, mentioned in Nasscom's just-published "Patent Pulse 2025" report, places India as the world's fifth-largest filer of patents and reflects the nation's swift emergence as a force in the worldwide AI competition.
The study finds that India's patent-to-GDP ratio has grown 2.6 times in the last ten years, indicating a strong drive towards an innovation-led economy. The growth in AI patent filings has accelerated very strongly: filings from 2021-2025 were seven times more compared to 2010-2015. Machine learning is the most prevalent type of AI patent, with generative AI being an emerging growth area-accounting for 28% of India's AI patents.
While the transport sector takes the lead in AI-related filings, India's patent grant ratio is still lagging in comparison with global leaders, which indicates the requirements of ongoing investment in R&D and IP quality. Nasscom's IP Enablement Initiative is designed to meet these challenges and drive India towards global leadership in innovation.
