84-year-old retired nuclear scientist Dr. Girish Mohan Gupta is now the envy of the academic circles after earning an MBA degree from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Sambalpur. The degree was given to him at the institute's latest convocation by Dr. P.K. Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, eliciting admiration from professors and students in attendance.
A senior scientist at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Dr. Gupta is no unknown to scholarship- he already has two PhDs in two different subjects and was instrumental in setting up Asia's first nuclear breeder reactor. Unmindful of his age, he regularly attended classes at IIM's New Delhi campus with the best attendance record in his group and winning over peers with his discipline and appetite for learning.
Dr. Gupta's thirst for knowledge remains unabated. He attributes his energetic youth to remaining active-playing cricket and badminton, working a full load, and guiding young researchers. Now, he is aiming for a third doctorate, this one in management, showing that age is not an impediment to ambition or success. His path is an inspiration to lifelong learners everywhere.
